On your travels - where will 2018 take you?

With another year all wrapped up, and one where I did the most travelling ever, I need to challenge myself by setting the “travel bar” even higher in 2018. I have quite a few things already booked, but have made sure to leave room to squeeze in a few unexpected jaunts, whilst I continue to arrange some amazing trips for my clients.

Maybe like me, you are starting 2018 with a New Year’s resolution to travel more or try something new?

Bed Hopping in Kenya

Kenya is the elder statesman. The iconic home of safaris and the mould from which all others have been cast. Just the name Kenya conjures up “Out of Africa” images of vast savannahs dotted with acacia trees, migratory herds ploughing through rivers and spear carrying men in Maasai red tribal outfits. But although Kenya is famous for its sheer volume of game, it’s also a place where you can easily combine safari with culture and a raft of other activities. I mean where else can you have breakfast with giraffes, watch a migratory river crossing, discover life with locals tribes people, return from your bush breakfast by camel, view game from horseback, track the endangered rhino and chill out on the beach…..all in one holiday? Well, that’s exactly what you can do on a trip to Kenya.

I don’t know about you, but I’m of the view that life is way too short not to celebrate every occasion. So, when Julian and I were approaching our 10th Wedding Anniversary, we decided we wanted to celebrate with a special trip; one that followed a similar pattern to our honeymoon – Cape Town, Kruger safari and Mozambique beach – but also ticked off a few things on our Travel Bucket List.

The question was: where to go? To be honest, I knew the beach section had to involve a stay on an island I’d wanted to visit for such a long time, Mnemba, which sits on the north-east coast of Zanzibar.

As for the safari, Julian and I had always wanted to experience a river crossing during the Great Migration. So, looking at the route of the Migration in September, our best chance of seeing this phenomenon was around the Mara Triangle in Kenya. So that was the safari sorted.

Finally, as we had to pass through Nairobi, I had the chance to tick a third item off my Bucket List, a stay at the legendary Giraffe Manor.

On Safari

My ears pricked up recently when I heard that Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition collection will be opening a Kenyan safari camp in 2013. If Ulusaba, his outpost in South Africa, is anything to go by this will be a stunning place with the emphasis on great quality, service and having fun but with leaving as minimal a footprint as possible and a focus on recruiting local staff.
