Summertime in St Moritz

July 4, 2025

St Moritz isn’t on my radar as a ski destination as I wouldn’t be able to afford it and I am definitely not part of the jet-set crowd.  So, when I was invited to experience the resort in summer, I jumped at the chance to see what St Mortiz was all about.

Set in Switzerland’s Engadin Valley, I have to say that after just a few days, I was smitten by the super laid-back vibe.   Far from the fur coats and champagne flutes of its famous winter season, summer in St Moritz swaps the glitz for gritty trails, paddle boards and panoramic views of jagged, snow-dusted peaks and crystal-clear lakes shimmering in what was - I was told - a few glorious days in the 322 days of sunshine this Swiss Alpine gem is blessed with.

Here’s what I loved.

The countless opportunities to actively experience nature.  Hiking is one of the most popular activities with over 580km of marked trails, from easy glacial strolls to heart-pounding ascents of peaks like Piz Nair or Piz Corvatsch.  The Muottas Muragl (accessed by a pretty funicular ride) to the Alp Languard trail offers jaw-dropping views of glaciers and emerald valleys, perfect for a day of exploration.

For those who prefer two wheels, the 400km of mountain biking trails cater to all levels, whether you’re a beginner cruising around Lake St Moritz on an e-bike or an adrenaline junkie tearing down Corviglia’s rugged slopes on the top of the range mountain bike.

What makes St Moritz summer activities so special is their variety.  Unlike many alpine resorts, as well as mountain activities, there are also the Upper Engadin’s 90 lakes, including Lake St Moritz and Lake Silvaplana, which are a dream for water enthusiasts.  I did a half day sailing lesson on Lake St Mortiz.  But you can quite easily glide across the mirror-smooth lake on a stand-up paddle board as the morning sun lights up the peaks.

The legendary Maloja wind - a reliable afternoon breeze - turns Lake Silvaplana into a global hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing, hosting events like the Engadinwind Regatta in August.

For an adrenaline rush, you can even tackle the Giarsun Gorge’s white-water rafting, where the Alps’ largest river volume promises an unforgettable ride.

Although many of the hotels in St Moritz are of the old school variety, I stayed in the much more contemporary Hotel Grace La Margna.  It’s definitely less fussy than many - both in terms of interiors and service - with a much younger feel and super friendly staff.

For stays of 2 nights or more in the summer, you get the Engadin Card included, which gives free access to trains and cable cars making getting around a breeze.

Added to the above access to nearby golf courses, tennis and paddle courts, what’s not to like about summertime in St Moritz?

Please do get in touch if you are interested in spending your summer in St Moritz.   As a more under the radar summer destination, it means there’s still pockets of availability for the months ahead.
